17-Year-Old Paul Shafer Jr., Ready For 'Home Game' With Border Wars II At Illiana Motor Speedway
2013 Track Champion set for second ARCA/CRA Super Series - ARCA Midwest Tour combo race at home track
(Special from Shafer Motorsports)
May 22, 2014
Portage, Indiana (May 22, 2014) – After spending the past two races with the ARCA
Midwest Tour Presented by SCAG Power Equipment, 17-year-old Paul Shafer Jr.'s next
race is again with the Wisconsin based series. Only this time the contingent within the
ARCA/CRA Super Series Powered by JEGS will also be on hand. The best of the best in
the Super Late Models racing world will be together for the second combination race
between the two ARCA sanctioned tours and for Shafer Jr., he wouldn't have it any other
way. Especially on his home track.

The Portage, Indiana native has spent all of the current season racing at new facilities,
this time around, Shafer Jr., will be on a familiar surface, the 1/2 (0.500) mile semi-banked
paved oval of Illiana Motor Speedway (IN) for the second Border Wars event pitting the
ARCA/CRA Super Series head to head with the ARCA Midwest Tour teams. The Calypso
Lemonade 150 is set for Memorial Day Monday, May 26th.

Illiana is the sight of his 2013 Super Late Model Track Championship and he hopes that
his home track advantage will help him in his quest for both tours' rookie of the year titles.
"There’s going to be a tough field at Illiana for the CRA/Midwest Tour combo race, but I’m
excited to come back home to race. It’s also reassuring when we have been there countless times and have run well in the past." Shafer Jr., stated.

"Although I’ve raced there for the last few years, it’s going to be my first touring race there. The biggest difference with the touring race is the competition and the tire compound, besides that, it’s just like racing last season." The Hoosier State teenager continued. "Plus, we’re coming off of our best run this year at State Park Speedway, so hopefully we get into a rhythm and start running well."

Shafer Jr.'s last race was the State Park 125 at the fast 1/4 (0.250) mile semi-banked paved oval of State Park Speedway located northwest of Green Bay in Wausau, Wisconsin on May 17th. The third ARCA Midwest Tour race of the season would see Shafer Jr., start 23rd and advance 13 positions to score a 10th place showing. Earning the events Hard-Charger Award in the process.

"I had a blast at State Park Speedway. That was a lot of ground to make up, but I was happy with the car and was determined to move forward." He explained. "As the race went on, we continued to move forward. Everyone burned up their tires early and came right back to me. At the break, (Crew Chief) Chris (Purdy) made a few small adjustments and the car was even better for the final 50 laps. We were moving forward until we got stuck in lapped traffic ending up 10th. I was really happy about the run we had; I think it is the best run we’ve had so far this season." He stated. "We were up racing with the faster guys. I learned a lot more about passing and gained a lot of experience because it is a no grip track.

For the remainder of the 2014 campaign, Shafer Jr.'s black and purple #7 Shafer Motorsports / Chevrolet which is a Pathfinder Chassis with power under the hood from Hamner Racing Engines will carry sponsorship support and decals from Southlake Body as well as Maxim Powersports and M.P.H.
