Brownsburg, Indiana (September 28, 2014) – The ARCA/CRA Super Series Powered
by JEGS headlined the prestigious McGunegill Engine Performance CRA Fall Brawl
Presented by EDCO Welding on Saturday-Sunday, September 27-28th. The
immaculate 0.686 mile semi-banked paved oval of Lucas Oil Raceway, located west
of Indianapolis in Brownsburg, Indiana served as hosts of all four CRA touring series
over the extended weekend in the Circle City. The template bodied Super Late
Models would headline the entire weekend in Central Indiana.
The EDCO Welding 100 Presented by Quarter Master for the ARCA/CRA Super
Series would be the 23rd all-time appearance at the sprawling facility. At the end of
100 laps on a beautiful Sunday afternoon, 2014 Redbud 300 Winner, Daniel Hemric
came back north and added a second pair of CRA Fall Brawl Boxing Gloves to go
with the ones he won in 2012 during his 2012 JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour
Championship title run. The 2013 Southern Super Series Champion and 2014 SSS
Runner-Up would cross the start / finish line first in his #98 Jack Link's Beef Jerky /
Jubilee Conferences / Ford for his second ARCA/CRA Super Series victory of 2014
and third overall of his career.
"Wow, this is really cool to come back here and get a win. Haven't been back here
since we won in the JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour in 2012 and we've wanted to come back here for the last couple of years, but couldn’t due to scheduling conflicts," Explained the 23-year-old from Kannapolis, North Carolina. "It is so nice to get a win here, especially for everyone at Carswell Motorsports."I was pretty down after practice yesterday. But I was reminded to have faith and we got it figured out. We made a big swing at it this morning and man did it make a world of difference. It is so good to get into victory lane. This is such a great track. I love this place." He added.
After EDCO Welding Fast Qualifier, Chad Finley drew a nine for an invert, Spencer Wauters and the all-time career leader in most start in ARCA/CRA Super Series history, Rick Turner would lead the 25-car field to Chief Starter, Brian Duncan's green flag to begin the milestone event in the 18-year history of Champion Racing Association. The race would mark the 300th all-time event in ARCA/CRA Super Series history so it seemed only fitting that Turner would beat Wauters and the rest of the field into turns one and two to grab the early lead as the rest of the field settled in behind him.
Brian Campbell, who returned to the series after missing the last four, quickly worked his way up into the top four and was set to challenge the teams in front of him when he suddenly darted right and slapped the turn three wall ending his afternoon on lap 10. On the restart, Daniel Hemric, who started fifth, had worked his way to second and began following the tire tracks of Turner all over the massive speed plant. Hemric tried every trick in his arsenal to get by the crafty veteran from near-by Yorktown, Indiana, but Turner was up to the challenge in the early stages of the race.
Finally on lap 39, Hemric made the winning pass stick on the inside lane coming out of turn two to take the lead. He would completely clear Turner a lap later and would try to pull away from the rest of the field. Senneker Performance Rookie of the Year title contender, 17-year-old Paul Shafer Jr., was having a career race as he worked his way up to second and was looking to take on Hemric for the lead. However, he had current points leader, defending series champion and defending CRA Fall Brawl Winner, Travis Braden all over him for the runner-up spot.
As Shafer Jr., and Braden battled, Hemric casually pulled away from the rest of the pack and would go on to score the victory and a second pair of CRA Fall Brawl Boxing Gloves in addition to the Five-Foot Trophy. Along-with the hardware, Hemric would also leave the Circle City with the AR Bodies Cool Move of the Race Award as well as the VanDoorn Racing Development Lap Leader Award and the VDL Fuel Systems Hot Lap of the Race Award for his efforts.
Shafer Jr., brought home a career high second place finish in his #7 Southlake Body / Chevrolet. The Portage, Indiana teenager would also collect the Senneker Performance Rookie of the Race Award and would also delay Rookie Points Leader, Wes Griffith Jr., from clinching the freshman title with one race to go in the season. The Hoosier State driver would also score the FLUIDYNE High Performance Cool Under Pressure Award after his career high showing.
EDCO Welding Fast Qualifier, Chad Finley came from his ninth starting spot to finish off the podium positions in third in his #42 AutoParts2020.com / Chevrolet. The 22-year-old would also leave Central Indiana with the first Hoosier Racing Tire Performance Award in addition to his Fast Qualifier honors. The DeWitt, Michigan driver was also one of a handful of competitors to pull double-duty as he also competed in the JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour race held earlier in the afternoon.
Ross Kenseth kept his Championship hopes alive with a fourth place finish in his #77 Boyne Machine Company / Ford. The 21-year-old gained some valuable points on Travis Braden after qualifying third and finishing ahead of Braden in the race. The Little Chute, Wisconsin driver will go into the 43rd Running of the Winchester 400 trailing the reigning champion by 25 points. After Braden got to as high as second, he did manage to stay in the top five in his #01 West Virginia University / Chevrolet and finished fifth. His 10th consecutive top five finish. The 20-year-old now must finish at least seventh in the 400 and he will repeat as series champion no matter what Kenseth does in the prestigious race.
Senneker Performance Rookie of the Year points leader, Wes Griffith Jr., finished sixth and needs to finish 24th or better in the Winchester 400 to clinch the 2014 freshman title. At 47 years old, he would become the oldest rookie in the series 18-year history to do so. Brandon Oakley would grab a seventh place finish coming off of his first career win at Kil-Kare Raceway (OH) two weeks before while Canadian Rookie, Brandon Watson was eighth. Turner recovered from a pit stop soon after losing the lead to Hemric to earn the Hedman Hedders Husler Award with his ninth place effort as Terry Fisher Jr., would complete the final top 10.
The day before in EDCO Welding Qualifying, Chad Finley earned his second Fast Qualifier Award of the season as he turned a 21.740 which measures out to 113.597mph. The track record in the Circle City remains a 21.284 which was set back on September 22nd, 2007 by Evan Jackson.
