DeWitt, Michigan (June 24, 2014) – Howie Lettow Memorial Rookie of the Year title
contender in the JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour Presented by Chevrolet Performance, 15-year-
old Grant Quinlan knew he belonged in a Late Model. A successful 2013 season saw the
Harrison, Michigan driver win everything there was in the Michigan Legends Series,
except for the series championship on a technicality. When the 2014 season arrived, it
was time to step up into the big time and in only his fourth race in a full bodied stock car,
Quinlan proved that he's right where he needs to be.
After leading initially until slapping the turn three wall and cutting a right rear tire with 32
laps to go, going a lap down in the process, he changed the tire and got back out. A
caution one lap after a restart put him back on the lead lap thanks to the 'free pass'. From
there, Quinlan put on a driving display few will ever forget. After passing Chuck Barnes Jr.,
on the outside with three laps to go, he then dove underneath race leader, 14-year-old
Garrett Jones as the white flag came out. His pass resulted in his first ever win in a Late
Model in only his fourth career start.
"I can't believe this. I thought we were done for sure the first time I hit the wall, cut that tire
and spun out," The elated and tired driver explained in victory lane. "The crew did a great
job to get me back out. But I thought we didn't have a chance at all losing a lap to the
leaders. Fortunately the yellow came back out about a lap after the restart and we got our lap back."
"I told the guys, we're going for it. It was going to be checkers or wreckers at that point. "Laughed the transplanted Great Lakes State teenager. "We hit the wall I don't know how many times getting back towards the front and then I bounced off of it a few more times making that pass at the end. But it all worked out. I just can't believe this is happening." The Great Lakes State teenager added.
With the win, Quinlan vaults into the lead in the chase for the 2014 Howie Lettow Memorial Rookie of the Year title. With his win, which accounts for his lone top five and top 10 finish, he has also climbed all the way to fourth in the overall JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour points standings.
I'm just in shock that we were able to even get to the front, let alone pass those guys bouncing off the wall like that," He continued. "I'm just so thankful for this opportunity with Chad Finley Racing and Downey Racing. They've given me great cars all season long and it's taken me a little while to get used to these bigger cars, but they've been patient with me and it really paid off." He ended.
Quinlan is in the midst of the Howie Lettow Memorial Rookie of the Year title chase in the JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour. There's also the possibility of select appearances in the ARCA/CRA Super Series while he'll also run some Michigan Legends Series events and even a few races in the World Karting Association (WKA) Manufacturer's Cup Series when the schedule allows.
As for the remainder of the 2014 racing season, Quinlan's #28 Chad Finley Racing / Chevrolet will have sponsorship decals and support from Quinlan Incorporated as well as International Tool and Mold, Five Star Racecar Bodies, McGunegill Engine Performance, Downey Racing and M.P.H. Promotions.
