Billy Van Meter Declared Winner of Vore’s Welding CRA Late Model Sportsman Labor Day Event
Flagged Winner, Quinnton Bear DQ'ed following post-race tech inspection
September 3, 2014
Salem, Indiana (September 3, 2014) – Following additional post race technical inspection
by CRA Tech officials, the cam of the engine of the #94 Quinnten Bear was found outside
of the required specs for a crate engine, and the team was disqualified from its win. As a
result of the disqualification, Billy Van Meter was declared the winner of the Vore’s
Welding CRA Late Model Sportsman Event on September 1st at Winchester Speedway
after initially finishing second to Bear.
According to CRA Tech officials, there were a few red flags along the way of checking the
engine that still had GM seals on it instead of those from an approved re-builder. Officials
further believed that the area where the cam was off would probably not have led to a
significant advantage, but in the end, the cam was still outside of the required factory
specifications.
According to the driver's father Fred Bear, the team is disappointed in the outcome but understands the process. "We bought the engine in the Carolinas and were assured it was within specs," Bear noted. "We are new to this type of crate racing and guess we should have done more homework on these engines or had it checked before we raced it. I obviously didn't expect there to be any problems or we wouldn't have gone through the work and trouble to take the engine out and give it to the officials if we had known there were issues. That would have been a waste of everyone's time."
Moving forward Baer said they team is taking their engine to an approved re-builder to put the engine within specs and plans to be ready for the next Series race at Anderson Speed on September 13th. He went on to comment, "We believe our speed was from our set up and our driver, and we look forward to getting back out there and have the same kind of winning performance. We also want to apologize to the CRA officials and the other racers, as this was not our intent and we learned a great deal from this experience. Congratulations to Billy and the entire 23 team on their victory."
