Portage, Indiana (September 25, 2014) – With two races left in the 2014 racing
season for the ARCA/CRA Super Series Powered by JEGS, 17-year-old Paul Shafer
Jr., knows that although he's not mathematically eliminated from the Rookie of the
Year title, he's got a steep hill to climb. Going into the final two shows at Lucas Oil
Raceway (IN) on September 27-28th and the 43rd running of the Winchester 400 on
October 10-12th, Shafer Jr., trails fellow freshman, Wes Griffith Jr., by 68 points. Not
an insurmountable lead, but one that will be a tall order to overcome.
Lucas Oil Raceway will host the McGunegill Engine Performance CRA Fall Brawl
2014 Presented by EDCO Welding is up first at the immaculate 0.686 mile semi-
banked paved oval located west of Indianapolis in Brownsburg, Indiana. The EDCO
Welding 100 Presented by Quarter Master for the ARCA/CRA Super Series will
headline the entire weekend in the Circle City. Other than his home track of Illiana
Motor Speedway (IN), LOR is the track where the Portage, Indiana teenager has the
most seat time at and site of his ARCA/CRA Super Series debut one year ago.
"I'm excited to go back to IRP. Last time we were there, we had a good car, but the
master switch went bad before qualifying." Explained Shafer Jr., as he reflected back
on the July 26th race at the Central Indiana oval where he finished a disappointing
21st. "This time should go a little smoother than the earlier race, but hopefully we
can just find a good run with some good luck."
The 2013 Illiana Super Late Model Track Champion returned to his home track back on September 13th for the biggest race of the season at the Schererville, Indiana speed plant, the 53rd Annual Tony Bettenhausen Memorial 100 where he finished fourth. The next day, Sunday, September 14th, the Shafer Motorsports Team made the trek east for the ARCA/CRA Super Series appearance at Kil-Kare Raceway (OH) for the Buckminn's D&D Harley-Davidson / Oakley Blacktop 125. Despite his first ever appearance at the tricky 1/3 (0.333) mile oval, he came away with a 10th place effort.
"The Bettenhausen went pretty good. We qualified fifth and finished fourth. Overall just a solid run." Continued the Hoosier State driver. "After the Bettenhausen, we stayed up all night getting the car ready for Kil-Kare. The track was tough at first, but got easier with more laps. We qualified eighth and started on the front row, but we had an incident which sent us to the tail. From there we just couldn't recover." He ended.
Shafer Jr., stands solidly in second place in the chase for the 2014 Rookie of the Year title in the ARCA/CRA Super Series, 68 points back of Wes Griffith Jr., for the freshman title. He has one top five, a career high fourth place finish at Flat Rock Speedway (MI), to go with five top 10 finishes. Shafer Jr., is also fifth in the overall standings, just seven points behind Rick Turner and those same 68 markers back of Griffith Jr., for third overall with two races left on the schedule.
For the remainder of the 2014 racing season, Shafer Jr.'s black and purple #7 Shafer Motorsports / Chevrolet which is a Pathfinder Chassis with horsepower under the hood from Hamner Racing Engines will carry sponsorship support and decals all year long from Southlake Body as well as Maxim Powersports, Genesis Energy Consultants, Paul's Auto Yard and M.P.H.
