Portage, Indiana (July 17, 2014) – Since the rainout of the ARCA/CRA Super Series
Powered by JEGS race at Columbus Motor Speedway (OH) on June 28th, 17-year-old
Paul Shafer Jr., has kept himself busy. Thanks to the unintended lull in the ARCA/CRA
schedule, the Portage, Indiana driver has raced in weekly Super Late Models competition
at Illiana Motor Speedway (IN) where he won the 2013 Track Championship and at Grundy
County Speedway (IL).
After finishing fourth at Illiana on July 5th in his Super Late Model, he would then go to
victory lane driving his Dad, Paul Shafer's Legends Car. Then just six days later at Grundy
County, Shafer Jr., would triumph again, only this time back in his Super Late Model to
give the Hoosier State teenager his second Super Late Model victory of the year to go
with his win back on May 24th at Illiana. The win at Grundy County would count as his
third overall of the season.
"After the rainout at Columbus, we weren’t exactly sure where to race, so we came back
home and went out to Illiana and Grundy. At Grundy, I drove up to the front to take the
lead from John Nutley coming to the white flag. It felt good to win again," Shafer Jr.,
explained. "It isn’t something that happens a lot, much less now that we’re running with
tough competition of the ARCA/CRA Super Series."He added.
Now Shafer Jr., the ARCA/CRA Super Series Rookie of the Year points leader, will get back into ARCA/CRA mode on Friday-Saturday, July 18-19th. The 2nd Annual Battle at Berlin 251 Presented by Primera Plastics is the second leg of the prestigious $100,000 JEGS Triple Crown Series. This is also a track that he's seen before back on May 31st in the series' first appearance of the year there.
"I’m excited to go back to Berlin. This is our chance to redeem ourselves for the poor showing in the first ARCA/CRA race there. We ended up 16th in that race and couldn’t seem to get out of our own way." Laughed Shafer Jr. "Hopefully the second time there will be better than the first. I feel comfortable with the car we are bringing this week. It’s a tough race track to get a hold of, so realistically, it would feel like a win just to run in the top 10 and be competitive on the lead lap." He ended.
In the ARCA/CRA Super Series points chase, Shafer Jr., leads the 2014 Rookie of the Year title point by just two over Wes Griffith Jr., and only nine markers ahead of Brandon Watson. He's also an impressive fourth overall in the standings with three top 10 finishes. His season high of seventh came at his home track of Illiana Motor Speedway (IN) during Border Wars II - Calypso Lemonade 150 on Memorial Day Monday, May 26th.
For the remainder of the 2014 racing season in both the ARCA/CRA Super Series and ARCA Midwest Tour, Shafer Jr.'s popular black and purple #7 Shafer Motorsports / Chevrolet which is a Pathfinder Chassis with horsepower under the hood from Hamner Racing Engines will carry sponsorship support and decals all year long from Southlake Body as well as Maxim Powersports and M.P.H. Promotions.
