Portage, Indiana (June 12, 2014) – Paul Shafer Jr., has been to big time races before in
his young career. After all, the 17-year-old competed in the prestigious Snowball Derby
down in Pensacola, Florida as a 16-year-old last December. So big races are nothing
new for the Portage, Indiana teenager. The next race on the schedule is one of the most
tradition laden of all short track events; the Stoops Freightliner Redbud 300 on Friday-
Saturday, June 13-14th at the fast 1/4 (0.250) mile high-banked paved oval of Anderson
Speedway in Anderson, Indiana.
"I’m glad to go back to Anderson. Before (April 26th) we finished eighth, which wasn’t
exactly what we were looking for. This time we get to go back for another 300 laps in the
Redbud." The Hoosier State teenager remarked. "Overall, the weekend should go a little
easier than the last time we were there. This time the track is not new to me and we have
a decent setup to work from. There are going to be a lot of good drivers there so it will be
a tough race to make, one of the toughest so far this season." He added.
Going into the Redbud 300, the first race within the $100,000 JEGS Triple Crown Series,
Shafer Jr., is third in the chase for the 2014 Rookie of the Year title but only nine points
out of the freshman points lead. He's also in seventh overall in the title chase with two top
10 finishes. His season high of seventh came at his home track of Illiana Motor
Speedway (IN) during Border Wars II - Calypso Lemonade 150 on Memorial Day Monday,
May 26th.
In his last race, the biggest track on the schedule for the 2014 racing season; the famed One Mile (1.017) semi-banked paved oval of the Milwaukee Mile, located west of Milwaukee in West Allis, Wisconsin was on June 8th. Another one of those bigger high-profile events; the 3rd Annual ARCA Fest which saw the ARCA Midwest Tour Presented by SCAG Power Equipment highlight the weekend with the running of the Howie Lettow Memorial 150.
After qualifying 21st out of a stacked 37-car field, after getting to as high as 11th place on the track, the engine expired in his machine ending his afternoon early. "Milwaukee seemed like it was going to be an average weekend, when we were running about 20th in the practices. We qualified a competitive 21st, which was great. During the race we fell back to about 25th with a loose race car. The first competition caution allowed for some adjustments to be made and tires thrown at the car." He explained.
"When we were back on track the car was a rocket. We were moving forward before the motor blew. It was a really disheartening way to end a great day. I thought I had a car capable of running into the top 10, but it was all cut short." He stated. "The car was by far the fastest, most consistent car that (Crew Chief) Chris (Purdy) has ever given to me. My favorite part of the weekend was running the outside, when everyone else was way down on the bottom. Even though the day was ended early, we still learned a lot and will be even better next time we come back to the Milwaukee Mile."
