Portage, Indiana (May 29, 2014) – If there was one race on the 2014 ARCA/CRA Super
Series Powered by JEGS Schedule that 17-year-old Paul Shafer Jr., was looking forward
to, it was on Memorial Day Monday, May 26th. The second Border Wars event pitting the
ARCA/CRA Super Series head to head with the ARCA Midwest Tour teams in the running
of the Calypso Lemonade 150 was at his home track of Illiana Motor Speedway, just 20
minutes from home in Schererville, Indiana.
The Portage, Indiana teenager started the weekend at the 1/2 (0.500) mile semi-banked
paved oval on Saturday, May 24th. The 2013 Super Late Model Track Champion made his
first appearance of the season in the tracks weekly Super Late Models division and
promptly picked up where he left off with his first feature win of the 2014 season. In turn,
the win gave him some much needed momentum heading into the Memorial Day Monday
tilt.
After qualifying 15th out of the 27 car field, the Hoosier State freshman in touring series
competition responded with a seventh place finish on his home track. "Illiana was
definitely a step in the right direction as far as our season goes. It was our best race
weekend of the season and at our home track, so hopefully we can carry this momentum
into Berlin." He stated.
With little time to reflect on his home track finish, Shafer Jr., will get back into new track mode this Saturday, May 31st with the Berlin 125 Presented by AutoWorldFinancial.com at the unique 7/16s (0.437) mile semi-banked paved oval of Berlin Raceway. The historic fairgrounds oval is located west of Grand Rapids in Marne, Michigan. "From what I’ve been told about Berlin is that it is a very deceiving race track. (Crew Chief) Chris (Purdy) has told me that it seems like you can go, but it will simply burn up the tires and the car will turn from normal to loose in an instant." He added.
As for his limited knowledge about the West Michigan speed plant, its par for the course for the 17-year-old. "This is about all I know about the track. I’ve never been there before, so it is just like most of the other races we have been at this season. Hopefully I can catch on quick and have another solid weekend like we did at Illiana." The Hoosier State teenager ended.
Heading into Berlin, Shafer Jr., sits second in the chase for the 2014 Rookie of the Year title in the ARCA/CRA Super Series. He's also an impressive fifth overall in the title chase with top 10 finishes. His season high of seventh came in the last race at Illiana.
