Portage, Indiana (October 9, 2014) – The biggest race of 17-year-old Paul Shafer
Jr.'s young career is next on the 2014 calendar. The 43rd Running of the Winchester
400 will be held at the famed 1/2 (0.500) mile high-banked paved oval of Winchester
Speedway (IN) on Friday-Sunday, October 10-12th. It won't be Shafer Jr.'s first time
on the legendary high-banks, having raced there over the Labor Day Holiday
Weekend, but it will be, by far, the longest distance race of his brief career at 400
laps.
Coming off of a career high second place finish in his last ARCA/CRA Super Series
Powered by JEGS race, the EDCO Welding 100 Presented by Quarter Master on
September 28th at Lucas Oil Raceway (IN), the Portage, Indiana driver is riding a
nice string of momentum. Since a fourth place finish at Flat Rock Speedway (MI) on
August 16th, he also had picked up another top 10 showing at Kil-Kare Raceway
(OH) before posting his career high finish in the Circle City.
"LOR went really well. We were pretty slow in practice but in qualifying the whole
weekend turned around. We qualified seventh and ended up second in the race,"
The exuberant Hoosier State teenager stated after the race. "This was, by far our
best showing of the year. It was tough to hold off (Chad) Finley and (Travis) Braden,
but somehow got it done and we finished in the runner-up spot behind a great driver
in Daniel Hemric."
As for the Winchester 400, Shafer Jr., and crew are ready for one of the most prestigious races in the country. His previous longest race was 300 laps at the 2013 Snowball Derby. "This is going to be my longest race to date, but I'm excited. Last time at Winchester bad luck knocked us out early, so hopefully we can come back with a car just as good." Shafer Jr., continued. "Momentum is definitely on our side after LOR, but we'll see how it goes and hopefully, we'll be there at the end contending for the win." He ended.
Going into the Winchester 400, Shafer Jr., is solidly in second place in the chase for the 2014 Rookie of the Year title in the ARCA/CRA Super Series, 59 points back of Wes Griffith Jr., for the freshman title. Shafer Jr., would need to win the Winchester 400 EDCO Welding Pole Award to have any chance at catching Griffith Jr., for rookie honors. Nevertheless, he two top five finishes with his career high second at LOR to go with six top 10s.
