Quincy, Illinois (June 12, 2013) – The primary goal for Quincy, Illinois teenager, Jake
Griffin coming into the 2013 racing season, was, and still is, the Howie Lettow Memorial
Rookie of the Year title in the JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour Presented by Chevrolet
Performance. Three races into the JEGS/CRA season, Griffin is now sitting on top of the
charts in a heavy and talent laden freshman class.
Griffin's last race was the Dixie 100 Presented by JEGS, the third race of the 2013
racing season within the JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour Presented by Chevrolet Performance
at Dixie Motor Speedway in Birch Run, Michigan on June 7th. After Qualifying 22nd out
of 28 cars, the Prairie State teenager knew he'd have his work cut out for him on the fast
4/10s (0.400) mile progressively banked paved oval.
"Racing at Dixie for the first time was fun, the week started out kind of slow, couldn’t get
the car right. We started picking up speed when Kirby (James Kirby, who works for
Scott Neal Racing on teammate, Landon Cling's car) did a really good job of setting up
the car for me this weekend. My crew also never stopped working on the car to make it
better." Griffin explained. "Come qualifying time I let my guys down, I’m not for sure what
I was thinking but I went and drove it like a Sunday drive and that’s not how you qualify. So we had a lot of work to do." He continued.
"We had a really fast car so we were moving forward pretty fast. After some contact early in the race the car had some front end damage resulting in the car having a push. But the crew did the best they could and got the body all fixed up and again, we were moving forward."
In the end, Griffin would leave Dixie with a 13th place finish and more importantly, he vaulted himself from fourth to first in the chase for the 2013 Howie Lettow Memorial Rookie of the Year title chase. "The car was fast out by ourselves, but once we got next to somebody it started to slide the nose. So we were just patient and avoided wrecks and came out with a solid finish and jumped into the top 10 in overall points. "I can't thank my crew enough for sticking with it and turning a car that was pretty far off when we arrived into something very competitive. I want to congratulate Cody (Coughlin) on his win also." He said.
There's little time to prepare for the next race as Griffin and crew will venture across the state of Michigan to the historic 7/16s (0.437) mile semi-banked paved oval of Berlin Raceway, located west of Grand Rapids in Marne, Michigan for the Berlin 100 Presented by Boyne Machine Company & JEGS.com on Friday, June 14th, which kicks off the Inaugural Battle at Berlin 251 weekend at the famed fairgrounds oval.
"I’m not really sure what to expect going into Berlin, I’m sure there is going to be a lot of cars there and some big names." Griffin continued. "I’ve heard lots of different opinions about it, but like every track we go to it is going to be a learning experience. If we can leave Berlin with all the fenders on it and a solid finish it will be like a win to us. Again I want to thank my crew for always working hard on the car to make it go around, and my sponsors for supplying us with the tools we need to do that. It wouldn’t be possible without either of them." He ended.
For the rest of the 2013 racing season, Griffin’s fleet of machines, whether it’s the JEGS/CRA car or the ARCA/CRA Super Series Powered by JEGS entry and even the UMP DIRTcar Modified will carry the #08 and sponsorship decals from Central Metals Recycling, as well as McPikes Pawn Shop, McGunegill Engine Performance, Powdercoat Plus, Green Smart Builders, Microtel Inns and Suites, Big Muddy Towing and Recovery and M.P.H.
