Lanesville, Indiana (May 6, 2013) – With the scheduled opener in Springport, Mich. rained out, the Deuser Motorsports team is now focused on the next event for the Jegs/CRA All-Stars Tour at I-44 Speedway in Lebanon, Mo. on Saturday, May 18.
And the team’s driver, 15-year-old Corey Deuser, has reason to be looking forward to the Mercy Masters of the Pros 144 at Missouri’s only asphalt oval. The team ran a few races at the 3/8-mile high-banked track, and Corey won one of their 30-lap local features in one of his first outings in a late model stock car.
“Sure, I’m looking forward to this one,” the high school freshman said. “We’ve been there three or four times and run well there, and I’ve run 100 laps. We just have to add 44 more to it.”
The competition is shaping up to be tough for this trip to the “Show-Me” state, with some high-dollar teams already entered, including two sons of NASCAR champions.
Expected are Chase Elliott (whose father, 1988 champion Bill Elliott, will serve as Grand Marshal of the event) and Ross Kenseth, son of 2003 champion Matt Kenseth.
“There’s going to be some people there with much more in the way of resources than we have,” Deuser commented, “but we’re not afraid to go in there and race with ‘em. We’ve been working on our car and getting it better each time we test. We know we’ve got to be faster than we were before on that track.”
Except for the rainout, the trip to Springport Motor Speedway in Michigan for the scheduled April 28 race was a productive one for the Deuser team.
“Yeah, it was a bummer because we got rained out,” Deuser said.
However, the team had a private test on Friday in which they made progress, and worked even harder on the car in the open practice session on Saturday.
“We got really good on Friday,” the driver recalled, “and the car was just where we needed it. On Saturday, even when it was fast, every time I came in my crew would try something else. It kept getting better and better.”
“He’s right,” reflected crew chief Jim Robinson. “We threw everything but the kitchen sink at it, and if we’d had one of those, we’d have thrown it in there.”
In cool weather on Friday, Deuser got down to a 15.27-second lap. With the warmer weather on Saturday, they were in the low 15.30s.
“We finally got it where we wanted it, and we were looking forward to the race on Sunday,” Robinson lamented. “Now we keep testing, and head for Missouri. There’ll be a good field there with some high-dollar teams, including Kenseth and Elliott, as well as Cody Coughlin, who’s a regular in our series.”
