DeWitt, Michigan (June 17, 2013) – Chad Finley and the Chad Finley Racing Team made
their way over to Marne Michigan on June 15th for the first major short track event of the
season in the Midwestern United States; the Inaugural Battle at Berlin 251 for the ARCA/
CRA Super Series Powered by JEGS. The 251-lap main also was the first jewel in the
$100,000 JEGS Triple Crown Series with a potential $100,000 is up for grabs to the driver
who can win all three legs of the series.
After the 251, the Triple Crown continues with the Redbud 300 at Anderson Speedway in
Anderson, Indiana on July 20th and concludes with the 42nd running of the Winchester
400 on October 13th. In order for Finley to have a chance at the six-figure bonus, he had
to win at Berlin and the DeWitt, Michigan driver came close despite a slew of obstacles
thrown his way.
“Going into this weekend everyone knew there was a lot at stake, knowing that the
winner of this race would be the only one eligible for the large purse of the Triple Crown
series” stated Finley. “We felt we had a pretty decent car all weekend. Throughout the
open practices Thursday and Friday, we made minor changes to the car to try and make
it the best we could.” Chad would continue to qualify fifth out of 35 drivers, and would
start the 251-lap main from the inside of the third row Saturday night.
Despite two mishaps on pit road and a spin at the midway point of the race, the 21-year-
old regrouped and rebounded for an impressive second place finish behind Winner,
Johnny VanDoorn. At the drop of the green flag, Finley started to make his way to the
front of the field. “One of the most challenging parts of this race is that we had to do live
pit stops. Knowing when or when not to pit could either make or break you on the track.”
A little ways after lap 100, along with leader Johnny VanDoorn, the #42 machine pitted to
take two right side tires and fuel up. Unfortunately a problem with the air gun cost Finley
positions on the track, and landed him at the tail end of the lead lap by the time he got
back out from pit road. At the drop of the flag Chad continued to make his way to the
front again, but he had a right rear flat tire and spun on the back stretch.
After making his way down pit road to do a quick tire change, he again charged to the
front. A few long green flag runs and a pit stop for right side tires, he would start in the fourth position on lap 211. He made his way past two more cars, and maintained the second position until the checkered flag dropped.
“Overall we were very pleased with our run tonight. All of the team did a great job on our pit stops. The last one made up for the time lost in the first two stops. Berlin has never been a favorite of mine, and to be able to say that I battled my way up to finish second is a great thing.” Finley stated after the race.
Up next on the list for DeWitt, Michigan driver will be the six-hour haul to the famed Milwaukee Mile, located in West Allis, Wisconsin on Monday-Tuesday, July 8-9th for the 2nd annual Howie Lettow Memorial 150 for the ARCA Midwest Tour. With the large purse of $10,000 to win and well over 70 entries; including NASCAR’s own Matt Kenseth, David Ragan and Kenny Wallace, this will for sure be one to prepare for.
